This Saint Epictetus was a martyr in Africa; according to the Bollandists *, his companions in suffering were: Saints Quinctus, Secundus, Jucundus, Saturninus, Vitalis, Quinctus, Vincentius, Felicitas, another Quinctus, Felix, Artaxes, Fortunatus, Rusticus, Sillus, Quietus, Pictus and five others. Apart from Saint Epictetus, the  Roman Martyrology * names just  Jucundus, Secundus, Vitalis, Felix and seven others.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN APRIL Saints celebrated on the 12th of April SAINT VITALIS, ABBOT Abbot Vitalis lived at the Basilian monastery at Rappolla in Calabria in the second half of the 10th century. He is known for his great holiness and austerity and died around A.D. 994.  The history of his Vita is fabulous, which is why we refrain from excerpts.  All that is certain is that he came from Sicily, where he was born in Castro Nuovo in Balle Mazara of rich and pious parents (his father is said to have been Sergius, his mother's name was Chrysonica) and raised in all piety.  When he had finished his studies, he opted for the life of a hermit after completing a pilgrimage to Rome.  At Terracina he was bitten by a snake, but healed completely by making the Sign of the Cross.   ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN OCTOBER Saints celebrated on the 23rd of October SAINT VITALIS OF THE RETZGAU, HERMIT Saint Vitalis was a hermit in the Retzgau (Pagus hætlatensis) of the diocese of Nantes in France. He had migrated from England to Brittany, where he settled on a high mountain called Scobrit, and lived a most holy life, dead to this world. Notwithstanding his hermit life, he did not fail to practice all sorts of works of spiritual and corporal mercy. Once, when he was carrying the timber for a church building, the woodcutters and draft animals came to a place that was without any source of water and hence suffered severe thirst. In this distress the saint prayed to God (in whose service he was labouring, after all) for water, and then confidently thrust his staff into the earth. SAINT VITALIS OF SAVIGNY, FOUNDER  Eglise de Savigny Saint Vitalis was the founder of the monastery and Congregation of Savigny (1112), born at Tierceville near Bayeux about 1060-1065; he died at Savigny, September 16, 1122.  HE BECAME CHAPLAIN TO THE CONQUEROR'S BROTHER His parents were named Rainfred and Rohais. We know nothing of his early years; after ordination he became chaplain to the Conqueror’s brother, Robert of Mortain (died 1100).  Vitalis gained the respect and confidence of Robert, who bestowed upon him a canonry in the Church of St Evroult at Mortain, which he had founded in 1082.  SEEKING A MORE PERFECT STATE OF LIFE But Vitalis felt within him a desire for a more perfect state of life.
