Saint Agathius, a centurion in Cappadocia, as well as Saint Maximus, priest, and Saint Anthes, deacon, were martyred at Constantinople, which was then still called Byzantium. 75 companions were killed together with them for the sake of the faith, namely Saints Arestinus, Marinus, Campus, Stereita, Rogata, Victuria, two ladies called Florida, Lucius, Donata, Victor, Flavia, John, Nina, Castus, Gaius, Furius, Maximus, another Victor, Julia, Felix, Marcian, Famosa, Honesta, Nigrus, Batleius, Rusticus, Processus, Secunda, Militus, Felicia, Maxima, Dativa, Tunianus, Eutidius, Secundola, Datica, Gundinis, Tertulus, Celestinus, Faustinus, Cenerius, Barachus, Siddinius, another Nina, Tidus, Mittunus, Siricus, Rogatus, Baccinus, Gadderus, Bereusus, Donata, Spicus, Rogatus, Saturnina, Gaudiosa, Vitalis, Cecilia, Januaria, Galla, Senerus, Rogata, Matrona, Augustina, Saturninus, Rufus, a third Victor, Faustinus, Cithinus, Boderus, Antiquus, a third Nina, Saturus and Nikoma.
Already while still in Nicomedia, Saint Agathius was horribly beaten with lead mallets after he had firmly confessed his faith, but he often had apparitions while he was locked up in prison during the intervals between the torture-sessions, which cheered him up and comforted him. He boldly preached Christ to his fellow-prisoners, and when all of them were taken to Constantinople to be executed, he encouraged them to a courageous death. He was beheaded in A.D. 303, while his companions were killed in various different ways.
