SAINT ERIC, MISSIONARY AND MARTYR
Saint Eric (Henricus, Hericus, Heerich or Erich, French: St-Hendric) suffered in Sweden, while Saint Alfard (Alfardus, Aluardus, Alsuardus) died in Norway. Both had gone on missionary journeys to the northern regions around the year 1055.
These missionaries had been encouraged by King Swein¹ (Sueno) (Estridson) of Denmark, who was very concerned with the propagation of the gospel, but according to Butler* (XIX. 284) he unfortunately tarnished his virtues by his propensity for fornication.
At the tombs of our two martyrs, many miracles took place through their intercession.
