SAINT VALERIUS, BISHOP OF SORRENTO
Saint Valerius was a bishop of Sorrento (Surrentinus) in Italy. He initially lived as a hermit in a small cell near the Church of Saint Renatus. Since he led a very holy life and worked many miracles, the Sorrentines chose him as their bishop, against his will.
Saint Valerius presided over his See with all dignity, defended the city against the hostile attacks of the Lombard leader Rodoald, and after his death, which seems to have occurred in the beginning or towards the middle of the 7th century, was buried in the cell in which he had lived before his election as bishop.
