SAINT ERNEST, ABBOT AND MARTYR
The name Ernest (Ernestus, Ernst) is derived from the old German ernust, meaning serious, strict.
According to Migne*, Ernest was an abbot of the monastery in Zwiefalten, who accompanied the Crusaders. Upon arrival in the Orient, he began to crisscross the area, preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ to the Persians in particular, and was finally martyred at Mecca in Arabia in A.D. 1148. But probably this Saint Ernest is identical with one of the other holy men*¹ of the same name, because perhaps the hagiographer Migne* got them mixed up? (Mg.)
