SAINT OWEN, RELIGIOUS
Saint Owen (Owinus, Oswinus), an Anglo-Saxon monk, was initially the steward of the holy queen Ethelreda, but renounced the world and entered the convent at Lasting. He brought nothing but a hatchet and an axe, declaring that he was determined to work also as a monk, because the holy studies were too difficult for him.
WHEN JOINING THE MONASTERY, HE BROUGHT HIS TOOLS WITH HIM
Nevertheless he devoted himself to prayer and reading with no less zeal. When Abbot Ceadda [St Chad] became Bishop of Litchfield, Owen accompanied him to this city and remained under his leadership until 672. It is uncertain how long he lived after that. In any case, he is said to have never become a cleric. His veneration has been established since time immemorial.
