WELCOME!

VIOLANTIA DE SOUSA, ABBESS

[Violantia; also: Violetta, Violeta]. The Bollandists*, as well as the martyrologies of the Benedictine and Cistercian Orders call her Violantia de Sousa. This is probably her family name. Her nunnery is stated to have been Saint Benedictus de Castris.

Lechner* writes the following comment about her: "Elected abbess, she lived for 28 years more like an angel than a human being." She died around the year 1400; the Bollandists* list this holy abbess among the Praetermissi (III. 718).
