SAINT PATERIUS, BISHOP
Saint Paterius flourished in the early seventh century. Little is known of him. Whether he was the student of Pope Gregory the Great of that name who is listed in old documents as a notary of the Roman Church, cannot be said with certainty; neither do we know for sure whether he was bishop of Brescia (namely the 23rd, or the 18th in the line of succession, as some sources state); nor is it clear whether he was the person who wrote Libri tres explanationum in omnes utriusque testamenti libros (a collection of explanations of Scripture), because it is commonly assumed that the last two volumes of this work were penned by a certain Bruno, who lived in the twelfth century. In 1478, Saint Paterius' relics were translated to the Church of Saint Eufemia (Euphemia) in Brescia. His public veneration is absolutely certain (III. 249 and 250).
