SAINT CONRAD OF BARI, HERMIT
Bari |
Conrad (Conradus), the son of Henry and grandson of Welf IV, Duke of Bavaria, began his scientific education in his homeland. Afterwards Conrad went to Cologne, where he was instructed by Bishop Frederick, Margrave of Friuli. Due to his excellent progress in the sciences he was expected to embark on a most magnificent career.
But Conrad was looking for something other than temporal honours and headed for Clairvaux, where Saint Bernard had just started the foundation of this monastery. Conrad then undertook a pilgrimage to Palestine to the holy places and spent the rest of his life with a hermit who instructed him in all spiritual perfection. He died at Bari in Apulia.
