GOSWIN, ABBOT


Goswin (Goswinus, Godevinus), Abbot, is commemorated on December 26; alternatively April 15). In the Elenchus*, this Goswin is listed on December 26 as a Cistercian abbot. He is likely identical to the Godwin whom the Bollandists* mention among their Praetermissi on April 15 (II. 370). According to Lechner* - who lists him in the index as Godewin or Goswin but refers to him in the text as Godevinus and accords him the title "godly" - he was Abbot of Anchin (Aquiscinctum) in Hainaut. This was a Cistercian monastery situated on an island in the River Scarpe near Douai; it belonged to the Congregation of Cluny, and it was there that he had taken the monastic habit. After his election as abbot, he lived just as one of the brethren, the only difference being that he led them by example in all monastic observances. He cared lovingly for the poor and for strangers. In his advanced age, he was summoned by Pope Eugene III to a church council in Reims. Saint Bernard held him in the highest esteem and, in a letter addressed to him, called him a saint. He died around the year 1166.

BLESSED LUKE KIRBY, PRIEST AND MARTYR 16th century houses, painted by Auguste Mayer He was born in the bishopric of Durham, according to Raissius ; others say at Richmond, in Yorkshire. BLESSED RICHARD NEWPORT, PRIEST AND MARTYR Richard Newport, alias Smith , was born in Northamptonshire and performed his studies abroad, partly in the college of Rheims (if he be the Richard Smith whom I find in the Douay diary sent to Rome in 1586) and partly in that of Rome, where he was made priest.
