SAINT HILARIUS, BISHOP OF TOULOUSE

Saint Hilarius [Saint Hilary], Bishop of Toulouse (commemorated on May 21, May 18; March 24, March 26; June 1; October 7), reputedly the third Bishop of Toulouse in the succession - is venerated in his diocese on May 21 with a ritus semiduplex. He took as his model Saint Saturninus, the first bishop and martyr of that city; the life and virtues of the latter were ever before his eyes, and he even had a wooden chapel built at Saturninus's tomb. It is claimed, however, that Hilarius lived in fact much later than Saint Saturninus. His tomb was discovered in the year 1200 or 1265, and his body was found to be still incorrupt 317 years later. Saussaye* cites March 24 for the discovery of his relics (revelatio) and the 26th of the same month for their elevation (elevatio), yet lists his actual feast day on June 1. The Bollandists* treat him in detail on May 21, where they also mention a second Bishop Hilarius of Toulouse.

BLESSED RICHARD NEWPORT, PRIEST AND MARTYR Richard Newport, alias Smith , was born in Northamptonshire and performed his studies abroad, partly in the college of Rheims (if he be the Richard Smith whom I find in the Douay diary sent to Rome in 1586) and partly in that of Rome, where he was made priest.
