SAINT CLAUDIUS AND COMPANIONS, MARTYRS
These holy martyrs are commemorated on December 3; alternatively March 19 and October 17). Saints Claudius - a tribune - and his wife Hilaria, along with their two sons Jason and Maurus and 70 soldiers, are listed in the Elenchus* as martyrs of Rome. Regarding them, the Roman Martyrology* states that on this day, Saint Claudius was thrown into the river (the Tiber) with a stone tied around his neck by order of Emperor Numerian (283-284), while his two sons and the 70 soldiers were beheaded. After burying the bodies of her sons, the mother Hilaria was seized by pagans while praying at their grave and subsequently died.
