SAINT PAUL LE-BAO-TINH, PRIEST AND MARTYR
[Saint Paul Le-Bao-Tinh, priest and martyr]
Paul (Paulus), martyred in Cochin China [Vietnam] in 1857, was beheaded at the age of 76. When he was led to be executed, the Upper Mandarin took him aside and, with assurances of respect, offered this holy Christian to spare his life if he would renounce his religion. “Upper Mandarin,” Paulus Tingh replied, “my body is in your hands, do with it what you will - but my soul belongs to God! Nothing can induce me to sacrifice them to the Emperor's wish.' (Marshall, I. 240).
