ST SULPICIUS AND ST SERVILIAN, MARTYRS - 20 APRIL

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN APRIL Saints celebrated on the 20th of April WELCOME! SAINT SULPICIUS AND SAINT SERVILIAN, MARTYRS Much of the legend of Saint Sulpicius (Sulpitius) and Saint Servilian ( Servilianus ) has been fabulously spun afterwards. The  Roman Martyrology* states merely  that they were restrained from idol sacrifices and converted by the admonitions and miracles of Saint Domitilla. What is absolutely certain is that they sacrificed their lives for Christ during the reign of Emperor Trajan, either in Rome or in Terracina. Their feast is celebrated in the diocese of Augsburg on April 20 ( ritu simpl .), since their relics were presented to the blessed Hariolphus and Erlalphus, the founders of the collegiate church of Saint Vitus in Ellwangen, by Pope Hadrian. This happened around the year 773. The feast of the translation is celebrated there on May 23rd. This explains why they are not mentioned in Piazza's * work. Church art depicts the story of their conver...

On the other hand, Ghislain states:  "Burial of our holy Father Sulpicius, bishop and confessor." He is also listed there on July 21. SAINTS OGGERIUS, SULPITIUS, AND SEMPRONIUS, BISHOPS IN SWITZERLAND

WELCOME! SAINTS OGGERIUS, SULPITIUS, AND SEMPRONIUS, BISHOPS IN SWITZERLAND  Following the martyr's death of  Saint Maurice (Mauritius) and his companions in Valais, many renounced idolatry, converted and turned our Lord Jesus Christ.  Around A.D. 310, Bishop Oggerius was active in that area. His full name was Oggerius Hypogrenensis and, according to an old catalog from Ivrea, was sent to Valais by Pope Marcellus . Since an ancient handwritten manuscript calls him a bishop, Burgener* (P. Laurentius - Helvetia sancta) does not hesitate (II. p. 143) to count him as a bishop in the proper sense. His successor in this mission, Saint Sulpitius, who came from Gaul and died at Martinach (in the year 323), bears the title of bishop. Bishop Sempronius is mentioned in 347. The Simplon is said to have been named after him, which we are not sure about, but it is definitely quite unlikely that he attended the Council of Sardica, which has been claimed elsewhere (Hefele , Co...

ST SULPITIUS THE SEVERE, BISHOP OF BOURGES - 29 JANUARY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JANUARY Saints celebrated on the 29th of January WELCOME! ST SULPITIUS THE SEVERE, BISHOP OF BOURGES   Two bishops of Bourges bore this name, Sulpitius [Sulpicius]:  Sulpitius the Pious (January 17) and Sulpitius the Severe. A MAN OF HIGH BIRTH Saint Sulpitius the Severe, wrongly identified with Sulpicius Severus , the historian of St Martin, was raised to the see in 584. He was, says St Gregory of Tours, a man of high birth, one of the first senators of Gaul, of great oratorical talent, and expert in the art of poetical rhythms.  THE ELECTION OF SULPITIUS The See of Bourges having become vacant with the death of Remigius, several candidates offered gifts to King Gontran to secure the assistance of his favour. But the latter rejected all these simoniacal gifts to favour the election of Sulpitius.  THE COUNCIL AT AUVERGNE He was elected, given Holy orders, and consecrated bishop. Shortly afterwards he held a council in Auvergne, to adj...

ST SULPICIUS SEVERUS, AUTHOR - 29 JANUARY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN JANUARY Saints celebrated on the 29th of January WELCOME! SAINT SULPICIUS SEVERUS, AUTHOR   (Disciple of St Martin of Tours.)  Saint Sulpicius Severus was born in Aquitaine, not at Agen, as Scaliger, Vossius, Baillet, etc. have falsely inferred from a passage of his history, but near Toulouse. That he was of a very rich and illustrious Roman family, we are assured by the two Paulinus’s, and Gennadius.  HIS STYLE His youth he spent in studying the best Roman authors of the Augustan age, upon whom he formed his style, not upon the writers of his own time: he also applied himself to the study of the laws, and surpassed all his contemporaries in eloquence at the bar.  HE SURPASSED ALL HIS CONTEMPORARIES IN ELOQUENCE AT THE BAR His wife was a lady of a consular family, whom he lost soon after their marriage, but he continued to enjoy a very great estate which he had inherited by her. His mother-in-law Bassula loved him constantly as if he h...
