ST BERARIUS, BISHOP OF LE MANS - 17 OCTOBER

SAINT BERARIUS, BISHOP OF LE MANS

Saint Berarius, commemorated on October 17, Bishop of Le Mans, was a native of Aquitaine; he ascended the episcopal see of Le Mans around the year 652 and held the office until his death (c. 678). The most significant event of his episcopate is undoubtedly the transfer of certain relics of Saint Scholastica to Le Mans. While local chroniclers maintain that Saint Scholastica’s entire body was brought to their city in the 7th century, the Bollandist* Stilting - in his account of the life of Saint Aigulf (September 3) - demonstrated that only a portion of her remains was brought to Le Mans; furthermore, in more recent times, the Bollandist* van Hecke, while discussing the life of Saint Berarius, cited a previously unknown bull of Pope Zachary (741 - 752) indicating that the relics of Saints Benedict and Scholastica were kept at Monte Cassino in the year 742.

BLESSED RICHARD NEWPORT, PRIEST AND MARTYR Richard Newport, alias Smith , was born in Northamptonshire and performed his studies abroad, partly in the college of Rheims (if he be the Richard Smith whom I find in the Douay diary sent to Rome in 1586) and partly in that of Rome, where he was made priest. From thence he was sent upon the English mission, and behaved himself in such a manner as justly to acquire the character of a laborious missionary; being withal remarkably successful in bringing home many strayed sheep to the fold of Christ, to which his apostolical way of living did not a little contribute.
