BLESSED ELLINGER, ABBOT
Blessed Abbot Ellinger of the Tegernsee monastery in Bavaria was a faithful guardian of discipline and order in degenerate times, and a courageous hero against the attacks of the wicked.
Elected abbot around the year 1016, he worked incessantly to stop the abuses that had crept in and to raise religious discipline. These his efforts caused him great contradictions, which finally grew so oppressive that he gave way and took refuge at the Niederalteich monastery (in present-day Lower Bavaria).
While Ellinger was there devoted to prayer and holy exercises, the Lord enlightened the souls of his wayward sons. They realised the wrong they had done, and implored their abbot to come back to them. If before Ellinger had steered clear of anger and pride, he now yielded to humble entreaty and returned.
For almost 40 years he presided over the monastery and led an exemplary religious life for the edification of all. In 1056 the Lord called him to his eternal reward. Many afflicted people received wonderful help through his intercession. Bucelinus' Supplements* list
