BLESSED UBALD, HERMIT
Blessed Ubald (Vivaldus), a hermit of the third Order of Saint Francis in Tuscany, was a student and companion of Blessed Bartholus (Bartholinus), whom he lovingly cared for during his 20-year illness.
After his master's death, Ubald made his home in a hollow chestnut tree. When he died around 1300, the bells rang by themselves. A hunter was led by his dogs to the hollow tree in which he found the pious hermit on his knees lying dead. As soon as the hunter had made the announcement, the bells stopped ringing. Ubald was buried in the local church. Later, a special church dedicated to the Mother of God and a monastery were built near his hermitage, where, to this day, miracles happen through Ubald's intercession.
