BLESSED ARNOLD OF CATANI, ABBOT
Blessed Arnold of Catani (Arnaldus Cataneus) came from the noble Catani family, was abbot of the Benedictine monastery of Saint Justina in Padua and succeeded Saint Stephen, the abbot who had been deposed in A.D. 1209 and had withdrawn into solitude.
Until 1246 he ruled the religious community in peace; then the tyrant Ezzelin captured him and left him to languish in a dark dungeon for eight years. At his death, which took place on February 10, 1255, a heavenly light illuminated the prison as a sign of how pleasing he had been to the Lord; but his confessors also confirmed his virtues. His body was buried in Asolo di Trevigio (Assum, Asilum), where he died - initially at the church of the conventuals. On March 4, 1524 he was solemnly transferred to the church of the monastery of which he was abbot, and was buried under an altar that had been built in his honour.
