SAINT ULFACIUS, ABBOT
Saint Ulfacius seems to have been born in the Auvergne region in the late 5th century. At the time of Abbot Maximinus (c. 520) he arrived at the Micy Monastery (St Mesmin), which was situated in the Orléans area, accompanied by his friends Avitus, Carilesus, Almirus, Baumadus or Boamirus (Bomer) and Senardus. There Ulfacius became a monk and probably also a priest.
With the permission of Bishop Innocent (Innocens), he then retreated as a hermit to the banks of the Braye River on the site of St-Ulphace, which is now named after him. After many students joined him, an abbey arose there. The date of Saint Ulfacius' death has not come down to us. According to Castellanus*, his relics were taken to Tulle near Limoges to protect them from the Norman invasion. For this reason, Ulfardus, who is venerated at Tulle is probably identical to Ulfacius. (III. 368.)
