ST VIGOR, BISHOP OF BAYEUX

Saint Vigor, Bishop of Bayeux (Bajocae) in northern France, is listed in the Roman Martyrology. According to the Gall. Chr.* he is the seventh bishop of that See in the succession. Arnold Wion* and the Proper of Bayeux* are the main sources from which his story can be pieced together.

Born in the Artois countryside of wealthy parents, and given by them to St Vedastus for his education, his parents wanted nevertheless to prevent that Vigor entered the monastic state. Feeling called to become a monk, however, Vigor left his homeland with his friend Theodemir. After some time, they arrived in the area around Bayeux.

There they started working straight away. First the saint laboured to eradicate paganism at Roduerum. God blessed his effort. Vigor brought back to life a child he had baptised. He healed the blind, the mute, and the sick of every kind, and killed a serpent which had long terrified the people.

After the death of the then Bishop of Bayeux (presumably St Contestus), he was chosen as his successor. To eradicate superstition he dismantled an idol that sat on the nearby hill of Phaunus and built a church in its place for the edification of the population, after which the hill was named Mons chrismatis, Mount of Anointing. He is also credited with founding the monastery of Cerare (Cerisi), which the Normans destroyed afterwards.

He died most probably before the middle of the 6th century (around 530) and was buried on the Mount of Anointing. His successor was Leucadius, who signed the third Council of Orleans in A.D. 538.

His festival is celebrated in Bayeux on November 5, in Coutances and Arras on November 3. On March 21 his translation to Centula (St Rignier) is celebrated. The church of his name near Bayeux is a parish church. In Ranbeck* he is depicted as a bishop; at his command Theodemir, who is with him, pulls a dragon into the sea by his stole, which he had wrapped around it. (Guerin).

FATIMA APPARITION - 13 AUGUST

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN AUGUST Saints celebrated on the 13th of August Marian Feast Days WELCOME! FATIMA APPARITION - AUGUST 13 The Fatima Children “BUT IN THE END MY IMMACULATE HEART WILL TRIUMPH.” But in the end my Immaculate Heart will triumph. The Holy Father will consecrate Russia to me; it will be converted, and a certain period of peace will be granted to the world. THE AUGUST 13 EVENTS On August 13, the children were in jail at Ourem. The civil administrator threatened to boil them in oil if they did not tell the Lady’s secret. Though badly frightened, they could not think of disobeying our Lady. In disgust, the administrator finally freed them. A large number of people, not knowing that the children had been kidnapped, went to the Cova for the scheduled appearance of the Lady. At noon, there was a loud clap of thunder. Then, according to an eyewitness: “Right after the thunder came a flash, and immediately we all noticed a little cloud, very white, beautiful and bright,...

BL. RICHARD NEWPORT, PRIEST AND MARTYR - 30 MAY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MAY Saints celebrated on the 30th of May WELCOME! BLESSED RICHARD NEWPORT, PRIEST AND MARTYR Richard Newport, alias Smith , was born in Northamptonshire and performed his studies abroad, partly in the college of Rheims (if he be the Richard Smith whom I find in the Douay diary sent to Rome in 1586) and partly in that of Rome, where he was made priest. From thence he was sent upon the English mission, and behaved himself in such a manner as justly to acquire the character of a laborious missionary; being withal remarkably successful in bringing home many strayed sheep to the fold of Christ, to which his apostolical way of living did not a little contribute.  He was several times apprehended and cast into prison, and twice banished. His name occurs amongst those who were transported in 1606; at which time, we are told, he took that opportunity of making a pilgrimage to Rome, there to pour forth his prayers at the tombs of the apostles, in behalf of thi...
