SAINT ELIAS AND COMPANIONS, MARTYRS
Saint Elias, Jeremiah, Isaiah, Samuel, and Daniel were Christians who had taken these their names at their baptism. They ministered to their fellow believers in Cilicia, who were condemned to work in mines.
After some time they returned to Caesarea in Palestine, where they brought several idolaters to the Lord Jesus Christ, but were reported to the authorities and seized by the governor Firmilian, cruelly tormented and finally, when neither promises nor threats could shake their Christian faith, they were beheaded. Their martyrdom took place in A.D. 308, during the reign of Emperor Galerius Maximian.
Thereupon Porphyry, a Christian servant of Saint Pamphilus, boldly approached the governor and asked for the corpses of the holy martyrs. This he did to protect them from dishonour and to bury them in a Christian manner. A Christian soldier from Cappadocia also took part in this work of love; he collected the blood of the saints, kissed their bodies, and covered them with his mantle. But these demonstrations of Christian love made it obvious that they, too, were Christians. As adherents of this religion they were also sentenced to torture. One ended by the sword, the other by fire. In their turn, some other pious believers provided for a Christian burial for these martyrs. The names of these saints are also found in the Roman Martyrology* on February 16, where the Cappadocian (Cappadox) has the name Seleucus. (II. 865)
