SAINT FEAST DAY 30 OCTOBER: ST GERMANUS OF CAPUA

SAINT GERMANUS, BISHOP OF CAPUA

The holy prelate, Saint Germanus of Capua, was sent by Pope Hormisdas as legate to the Emperor Justin, in 519, to engage the Orientals to put an end to the schism which had continued forty years.

The embassy was attended with the desired success; the heretics were condemned, and the schism entirely abolished. In it Saint Germanus and his fellow legates suffered much from the heretics, but escaped out of their hands.

HE WAS DELIVERED BY ST GERMANUS' PRAYERS

Saint Gregory the Great relates that this saint saw Paschasius, the deacon of Rome, long after his death, in the flames of Purgatory, for having adhered to the schism of Laurence against Symmachus, and that he was delivered by the prayers of this holy bishop.

Also that Saint Benedict at Mount Cassino saw in a vision the soul of Saint Germanus, at the hour of his departure, carried by the ministry of angels to eternal bliss. His death happened about the year 540.

O God, who gladden us each year by the feast of Saint Germanus, graciously grant that, as we rejoice in his merits, we may be inspired by his example. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

SERVANT OF GOD JACQUES HAMEL, PRIEST AND MARTYR "Jacques Hamel (30 November 1930 - 26 July 2016) was a French Catholic priest who served in Saint-Étienne-du-Rouvray. On July 26, 2016, Hamel was murdered during the 2016 Normandy church attack by two Muslim men pledging allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant while he celebrated Mass in his church." (From Wikipedia) Father Hamel, 85, still officiated regularly as auxiliary at the church in St Étienne-du-Rouvray, near Rouen, Normandy, France, and in neighbouring Elbeuf, local media reported, stepping in when the parish’s regular priest, Father Auguste Moanda-Phuati, was busy.
