ST ASAPH, BISHOP
[Also May 1.] Saint Asaph was a disciple of the bishop St Kentigern (January 13) of Glasgow in Scotland. He entered the monastery of Llan-Elwy in North Wales, which was founded by that holy bishop after he had to flee from Scotland.
ST KENTIGERN'S RETURN
When the political situation had improved, St Kentigern was able to return to his diocese. He therefore placed St Asaph at the head of the monastery of Elwy because of the latter's piety and knowledge, and raised him to the episcopal chair which was connected to it.
A MIRACLE
St Asaph died towards the end of the 6th century (according to some 596). Among other miracles ascribed to him, this is said of him, that he, sent by his master to fetch fire, brought glowing coals in his robe, without damaging it in the least. His name is listed in the Roman Martyrology.
