Prayer to the Angels and the Saints

Heavenly Father, in praising Your Angels and Saints we praise Your glory, for by honouring them we honour You, their Creator. Their splendour shows us Your greatness, which infinitely surpasses that of all creation.

In Your loving providence, You saw fit to send Your Angels to watch over us. Grant that we may always be under their protection and one day enjoy their company in heaven.

Heavenly Father, You are glorified in Your Saints, for their glory is the crowning of Your gifts. You provide an example for us by their lives on earth, You give us their friendship by our communion with them, You grant us strength and protection through their prayer for the Church, and You spur us on to victory over evil and the prize of eternal glory by this great company of witnesses.

Grant that we who aspire to take part in their joy may be filled with the Spirit that blessed their lives, so that, after sharing their faith on earth, we may also experience their peace in heaven. Amen.

BL. JAKOB KERN, PRIEST

Franz Alexander Kern, also known by his religious name Jakob, was an Austrian Roman Catholic priest and a professed member of the Premonstratensians.

Blessed Jakob was born on April 11, 1897 to a very devout Catholic family. Blessed Jakob served as a soldier in the Austro-Hungarian armed forces during World War I and suffered threatening injuries that impeded his health for the remainder of his life and which often hampered his studies for the priesthood.

He fostered an intense devotion for the Eucharist - for which he was known - and was often found in constant Eucharistic Adoration. He died on October 20, 1924 as a result of the complicated lung injury he sustained during WWI, after having predicted his death.

The formal request for the canonisation cause to open was lodged with the Congregation for Rites in Rome on November 15, 1956 and the latter department allowed for it to open in Vienna where its metropolitan archbishop Franz König inaugurated the diocesan process on March 18, 1958 and oversaw its closure before his retirement in 1985.

Blessed Jakob was proclaimed to be Venerable on July 11, 1985 after Pope John Paul II confirmed the fact that Kern had lived a model Christian life of heroic virtue both cardinal and theological. The investigation for a miracle occurred in the diocese of its origin and received C.C.S. validation in Rome on May 20, 1994 before it was passed to a medical board on July 4, 1996 who approved the miracle. Theologians also approved it on January 24, 1997 and the cardinal and bishop members of the C.C.S. followed suit on April 15, 1997 before John Paul II issued his final approval to the miracle on July 7, 1997.

The Pontiff beatified Blessed Jakob on June 21, 1998 on his apostolic visit to the Austrian nation. (Information from Wikipedia)

ST JOHN BERCHMANS, RELIGIOUS - 13 AUGUST

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN AUGUST Saints celebrated on the 13th of August WELCOME! SAINT JOHN BERCHMANS, RELIGIOUS   (Patron Saint of Altar Servers.) The eldest boy of a poor cordwainer, in a small Belgian town, John was ever a dutiful, prayerful, and studious child. Our Lord called him when but young to leave his father and his father’s house, to serve Him in the Society of Jesus.  And because he was so good a son, it cost his father much to give him up to God; but he was too good a Christian to refuse outright.  HE WAS SENT TO ROME John had hardly taken his religious vows when he was sent to the centre of Christendom, the holy city of Rome. His modesty, his purity, shone out as great virtue always does; and the young laymen who attended the lectures would come to gaze upon his beautiful and holy face, and go away the better for the sight. GREAT VIRTUE Three short years, and his last sickness found him sighing for heaven, and three days before the great feast of Mary’s Assumption in 1
