BACKGROUND: 

The Martyrs of Quiche are a group of victims of the civil war in Guatemala. These were Spanish priests and Guatemalan lay faithful, who were assassinated by government troops because of their religious activities among the poor and indigenous. Recognised as martyrs by the Catholic Church, they are venerated as blessed.

BL. TOMAS RAMIREZ CABA:

Blessed Tomas was born December 30, 1934 in Chajul, Guatemala, this father served as sacristan in the parish of Chajul. He was assassinated on September 6, 1980

Another of the martyrs is Blessed Jose Maria Grand Cicera, who was born on April 27, 1945 in Barcelona, ​​he made profession with the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart on September 8, 1966. Ordained a priest on June 9, 1972, he first exercised his ministry in Valencia, before being sent on mission to Guatemala, in 1975. In 1978 he was appointed parish priest of San Gaspar de Chajul. He became close to the poorest and the natives. Despite being threatened by the military authorities, he continued his pastoral activities. After a visit to a village in the parish, he was assassinated on June 4, 1980 with his sacristan, Domingo del Barrio Batz. They had stopped to pray by the wayside, and were riddled with bullets at that time.

ST BERTHA OF AVENAY, ABBESS AND MARTYR The name Bertha (Berta) is derived from the Old German  bercht, brecht, bert etc., meaning shiny, splendid.  Saint Bertha, a martyr and abbess of Avenay (Aveniacum) in the diocese of Rheims, was descended from a noble family. Married to  St Gumbert (April 29), she obtained her husband's consent to join the monastic life. She then built the aforementioned monastery of Avenay. Following an apparition of the Blessed Virgin, she received many nuns there.
