BLESSED EGBERT, ARCHBISHOP OF YORK
Blessed Egbert (Elabert, Albert, Adalbert, Aethelbertus) had as a brother the king of Northumberland, who was also called Egbert.
Our Egbert left the royal court, entered a convent at York, distinguished himself by his piety as well as by the wealth of his knowledge, and had many pupils, the most famous of whom was Alcuin.
When he was later elevated to the archbishopric of York, he brought the pallium to his church, and established an important library.
He died A.D. 766 and was buried next to his brother. So reports Bucelin*, who lists St Egbert on November 19 and provides us with the same details about him - the only difference being that Egbert took the monastic habit in coenobio Girvensi sive Wirensi.
On the other hand, in the Elenchus* we find the following entry on November 19: "Egbertus, Ep. Eboracensis alter", and thus they seem to have a different Egbert in mind than the one discussed here. (Buc. El.)
