Saints celebrated on the 12th of May
Saint Dominic of Calzada (Dominicus Calciatensis), a confessor, was born in the Spanish province of Biscay. He tried to join the Order of Saint Benedict. Because he was unsuccessful, he instead started a life as as a hermit, and then attached himself to Bishop Gregory of Ostia (May 9), who had come to Spain to preach the Gospel.
Finally Dominic set up his residence at Calzada (Calciata) in the Spanish province of Rioja (Rivogia), which place has been known as Domingo de la Calzada ever since. Here in this place he erected a church in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary, performed many miracles and once tamed a herd of wild oxen. He dug his own grave and finally died, probably in A.D. 1109.
Many miracles happened at his grave and his memory is celebrated with great solemnity in la Calzada in Rioja, in the Diocese of Calahorra and in the Bishopric of Burgos (Burgi, Bravum).
