SAINT ENECO, ABBOT
Saint Eneco (Enecon), a Spaniard, lived for a long time in the Pyrenees as a hermit. When, after Abbot Garsia's death, the Benedictine monastery of St Salvator de Onna needed a new competent head who would be able to carry out the reformation that had begun there, attention was drawn to the pious hermit Eneco, whose holiness was known far and wide.
King Sanctus sent messengers to him, but they received a negative reply. Then the king himself went to him and urged him to take care of the orphaned monastic community. Now Eneco gave in, let himself be introduced to his office and administered it in an exemplary manner. He was a true father of the house, with a careful eye on the spiritual progress of his sons.
An object of good pleasure to God, angels, and men, he was bestowed with the gift of miracles. The persecutions that befell him always ended brilliantly for him. Once the land was afflicted with drought, and at his intercession received a refreshing rain.
In 1057 Abbot Eneco suddenly fell ill at Solduego. As he was being taken back to the monastery, he asked his brethren to please offer some food and drink to the boys who had accompanied him with lighted candles. Since no one saw these boys, it was assumed that they were angels. The disease became worse and Eneco died in 1057. Even Jews and Saracens are said to have wept at his death. Countless miracles happened at his grave, which is why Pope Alexander II included Eneco in the number of saints a few years after his passing. He is venerated in many places in Spain and is invoked especially in times of drought to obtain rain from God through his intercession. His name can also be found in the Roman Martyrology* on June 1.
