BLESSED GUY OF CORTONA, RELIGIOUS

A page of one of Fortunatus Hueber's
Saints' books,
"Stammenbuch..." (1693)

We do not know anything about his parents or background. He was able to read and write from a young age, and known for being pious and innocent. Guy (Guido) lived partly on the earnings of his parents' fortune, partly on the labour of his hands. Whatever he had left he gave to the poor for Christ's sake.

When Saint Francis came to Cortona around 1211 and preached, Guy asked him to join his Order. After distributing all his belongings among the poor, the saint led him into the church and gave him the habit in front of all the people. Then they went to a neighbouring place, where they built a small monastery from alms, which received the name Celle (Cellae). At his request, Blessed Guy was given his own cell on a wooden bridge over the stream. The Guardian asked him to study and be ordained a priest, which Guy did. When Saint Francis later came to Cortona again, he recommended Blessed Guy to the inhabitants, who by now frequently preached there. They liked to hear him; for he practiced himself what he preached.

When he once fell seriously ill and was close to death, he allowed himself to be given spring water and blessed it in the name of the Holy Trinity and, after drinking, suddenly recovered. The same miracle was repeated with several sick people who drank from this water. A priest whose right arm and hand were paralyzed was restored to health through the intercession of Blessed Guy, who marked his arm with the Sign of the Cross and said: "May Jesus Christ heal you."

At one time there was a great famine in the country. By a divine miracle, Guy provided flour for a poor woman, and in Cortona he also brought a drowned girl back to life. When he was 60 years old, Saint Francis appeared to him, saying, "The time has come, my son, when you and your brothers will be rewarded for your labours; know, then, that after three days I shall come at the hour of None to bring you, by the grace of God, to Paradise." So it happened. Guy died on June 12 at the monastery near Cortona, according to some in 1250, but according to the Bollandists around 1245.

Blessed Guy is also commemorated on January 12 and May 12.

ST JOHN BERCHMANS, RELIGIOUS - 13 AUGUST

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN AUGUST Saints celebrated on the 13th of August WELCOME! SAINT JOHN BERCHMANS, RELIGIOUS   (Patron Saint of Altar Servers.) The eldest boy of a poor cordwainer, in a small Belgian town, John was ever a dutiful, prayerful, and studious child. Our Lord called him when but young to leave his father and his father’s house, to serve Him in the Society of Jesus.  And because he was so good a son, it cost his father much to give him up to God; but he was too good a Christian to refuse outright.  HE WAS SENT TO ROME John had hardly taken his religious vows when he was sent to the centre of Christendom, the holy city of Rome. His modesty, his purity, shone out as great virtue always does; and the young laymen who attended the lectures would come to gaze upon his beautiful and holy face, and go away the better for the sight. GREAT VIRTUE Three short years, and his last sickness found him sighing for heaven, and three days before the great feast of Mary’s Assumption in 1

ST LAURA OF CORDOBA, WIDOW AND MARTYR - 19 OCTOBER

WELCOME! SAINT LAURA OF CORDOBA, WIDOW AND MARTYR   Laura, a widow and martyr of Cordoba in Spain, is mentioned in the Spanish martyrology of Tamajode Salazar, who refers to Luitprand, where it says the following: St Laura is said to have been of a noble family, and  according to the wishes of her parents she married an equally noble man and gave birth to two daughters.  After the death of her husband and her daughters, she went to the monastery of St Aurea, named St-Maria de Cuteclara, and after her martyrdom led the same for nine years as her successor.  After she had made wonderful progress in all virtues, she was finally summoned to renounce the faith before a Saracen judge. But since she remained steadfast, she was first beaten very cruelly and then thrown into a bath of boiling pitch, where she remained in praise of God for three hours and then flew to heaven on October 19, 864.   St Laura is of the 48 Martyrs of Cordoba. PRAYER: Grant, we beseech you, almighty God, that we who
