JOHN GRADENICUS, RELIGIOUS
John Gradenicus (Gradonicus) (Johannes), who was descended from a Venetian family, joined Saint Romuald, in whose life story on February 7 he is mentioned several times by the Bollandists* (II. 106-109).
Once, against the will of his master, John wanted to travel to Jerusalem with another man, and he broke his leg. He then repented of his disobedience and, after his recovery, had a cell built for himself near the monastery of Monte Cassino, where he spent 30 years in perfect penance. One thing he did not tolerate was defamation. In his presence, no one dared utter the slightest slander. He died in A.D. 1012.
After his death some miracles happened through his intercession. His memory is celebrated at Camaldoli and Monte-Cassino; but he is not listed in any of the relevant martyrologies. Lechner* calls him "godly", and Bucelin* mentions him on December 5, and also on March 4 and February 20.
