SAINT EUSEBIUS, ABBOT

Saint Eusebius was born in Cremona in Italy to wealthy and respectable parents. At quite a young age he undertook a pilgrimage to Rome, visiting tombs of the holy apostles. In the eternal city he met Saint Jerome, whose pupil, friend and companion he became. After the death of Pope Damasus he accompanied Jerome when the latter left Rome for Palestine. Upon arrival, Eusebius locked himself in the monastery in Bethlehem founded by Jerome and Paul, and devoted himself entirely to penance, prayer and the study of the holy sciences.

Some time later, Eusebius and Paul made a trip to Dalmatia and Rome, where Eusebius had to endure many hardships from the priest Rufinus of Aquileia on matters of inheritance.

Eusebius, though possessed of great learning, does not seem to have left many writings, yet some consider him on a par with the Doctors of the Church.

In 420, following the death of Saint Jerome, his brethren unanimously elected him abbot, an office he was not to hold for long; because after about three years he appears to have followed Jerome into eternity, at whose side he was also buried.

Eusebius is particularly venerated in Cremona and Bethlehem, at which latter place he still has his own altar today. From the back of the holy Grotto of the Nativity, a door leads into a fairly long, curved rock passage, and in this there is, along with the altar of Saint Joseph, also that of Saint Eusebius.

The Roman Martyrology* does not mention him; other hagiographers list him either on March 5 or on October 19. Those writers who confuse our saint with another Eusebius place his name on August 14. (Mart. I. 369)

PRAYER:

Grant, we beseech you, almighty God, that the venerable feast of Saint Eusebius may increase our devotion and promote our salvation. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

FATIMA APPARITION - 13 AUGUST

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN AUGUST Saints celebrated on the 13th of August Marian Feast Days WELCOME! FATIMA APPARITION - AUGUST 13 The Fatima Children “BUT IN THE END MY IMMACULATE HEART WILL TRIUMPH.” But in the end my Immaculate Heart will triumph. The Holy Father will consecrate Russia to me; it will be converted, and a certain period of peace will be granted to the world. THE AUGUST 13 EVENTS On August 13, the children were in jail at Ourem. The civil administrator threatened to boil them in oil if they did not tell the Lady’s secret. Though badly frightened, they could not think of disobeying our Lady. In disgust, the administrator finally freed them. A large number of people, not knowing that the children had been kidnapped, went to the Cova for the scheduled appearance of the Lady. At noon, there was a loud clap of thunder. Then, according to an eyewitness: “Right after the thunder came a flash, and immediately we all noticed a little cloud, very white, beautiful and bright,...

BL. RICHARD NEWPORT, PRIEST AND MARTYR - 30 MAY

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN MAY Saints celebrated on the 30th of May WELCOME! BLESSED RICHARD NEWPORT, PRIEST AND MARTYR Richard Newport, alias Smith , was born in Northamptonshire and performed his studies abroad, partly in the college of Rheims (if he be the Richard Smith whom I find in the Douay diary sent to Rome in 1586) and partly in that of Rome, where he was made priest. From thence he was sent upon the English mission, and behaved himself in such a manner as justly to acquire the character of a laborious missionary; being withal remarkably successful in bringing home many strayed sheep to the fold of Christ, to which his apostolical way of living did not a little contribute.  He was several times apprehended and cast into prison, and twice banished. His name occurs amongst those who were transported in 1606; at which time, we are told, he took that opportunity of making a pilgrimage to Rome, there to pour forth his prayers at the tombs of the apostles, in behalf of thi...
