SAINT SCHOLASTICA, PATRON SAINT OF CHILDREN WITH EPILEPTIC FITS

St Scholastica was the sister of St Benedict. She consecrated herself to God as a virgin and lived not far from the monastery of Monte Cassino founded by her brother.

Two miracles, related by St Gregory, have remained famous: they show St Scholastica’s great purity of soul and the closeness of her union with God. As Benedict refused to prolong the spiritual conversation which each year he allowed his sister in a dependency of the monastery, Scholastica’s prayers obtained from heaven a violent storm and heavy rain which prevented her brother from leaving; they remained together the whole night, speaking of heavenly things. The day afterwards, St Benedict saw the pure soul of his sister going up to heaven in the form of a dove. St Benedict died in 547; St Scholastica died shortly before him

PRAYER:

O God, You caused the soul of Your blessed virgin Scholastica to enter heaven in the form of a dove, to show us the way of innocence. Grant us, by her prayers and merits, to live in such innocence, that we may deserve to attain eternal joys.

Through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

INTERCESSIONS:

Saint Scholastica prayed in love and confidence. Because of her love, her prayer was heard and answered. Through her intercession, let us now pray:

V. By the example and intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, keep us faithful to your word.

R. Hear us, O Lord.

V. By the example and intercession of St Scholastica, keep us rooted in your love

R. Hear us, O Lord.

V. By the example and intercession of all the holy virgins, keep us firm in prayer and charity.

R. Hear us, O Lord.

(Now mention your own intentions.)

Our Father…

Let us pray:

Lord our God, you robed the virgin St Scholastica with the beauty and splendour of love. Help us to walk blamelessly before you so that in the company of virgins we may praise your name for ever, and find our delight in you, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

ST LAURA OF CORDOBA, WIDOW AND MARTYR - 19 OCTOBER

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN OCTOBER Saints celebrated on the 19th of October WELCOME! SAINT LAURA OF CORDOBA, WIDOW AND MARTYR   Laura, a widow and martyr of  Cordoba  in Spain, is mentioned in the Spanish martyrology of Tamajode Salazar, who refers to Luitprand, where it says the following: St Laura is said to have been of a noble family, and  according to the wishes of her parents she married an equally noble man and gave birth to two daughters.  After the death of her husband and her daughters, she went to the monastery of St Aurea, named St-Maria de Cuteclara, and after her martyrdom led the same for nine years as her successor.  After she had made wonderful progress in all virtues, she was finally summoned to renounce the faith before a Saracen judge. But since she remained steadfast, she was first beaten very cruelly and then thrown into a bath of boiling pitch, where she remained in praise of God for three hours and then flew to heaven on October...

ST JOHN BERCHMANS, RELIGIOUS - 13 AUGUST

ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN AUGUST Saints celebrated on the 13th of August WELCOME! SAINT JOHN BERCHMANS, RELIGIOUS   (Patron Saint of Altar Servers.) The eldest boy of a poor cordwainer, in a small Belgian town, John was ever a dutiful, prayerful, and studious child. Our Lord called him when but young to leave his father and his father’s house, to serve Him in the Society of Jesus.  And because he was so good a son, it cost his father much to give him up to God; but he was too good a Christian to refuse outright.  HE WAS SENT TO ROME John had hardly taken his religious vows when he was sent to the centre of Christendom, the holy city of Rome. His modesty, his purity, shone out as great virtue always does; and the young laymen who attended the lectures would come to gaze upon his beautiful and holy face, and go away the better for the sight. GREAT VIRTUE Three short years, and his last sickness found him sighing for heaven, and three days before the great feast of Mar...
