ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN DECEMBER
Saints celebrated on the 31st December
BLESSED ALAN DE SOLMINIHAC, BISHOP OF CAHORS
Alan de Solminihac, Bishop of Cahors, was born at Belet Castle, not far from Perigueux, on November 25, 1595. He was a descendant of one of the richest and oldest families in the country. His parents meant to get him married and intended to have him accepted into the Military Order of the Maltese. Alan's uncle, the abbot of Chancellade (Fons Cancellatus), however, expressed the desire to resign his position for Alan to eventually become his successor. The latter understood this opportunity to have been provided by Providence. Therefore he chose to join the clergy.
For this purpose Alan devoted himself to the necessary studies and in due course was installed as abbot (on January 6, 1623). The monastery was in internal and external decay; but Abbot Alan spared no effort to restore both the church and the monastery, and to imbue it with the true monastic spirit. His undertakings were met with the best of success.
Through the skill with which he carried out some tasks relating to monastery visits, he attracted the attention of King Louis XIII. and his great minister Richelieu. Although Alan managed to reject the bishopric of Lavour, he could not avoid accepting that of Cahors. At the age of 43, in 1637, Abbot Alan was ordained bishop. He died on December 31 in 1659, after 22 years of administering this great diocese for the blessing and salvation of the faithful. (But.)
