ELIZABETH OF AUSTRIA, WIDOW
Elizabeth of Austria (Elisabeth Austriaca), was the daughter of Emperor Maximilian II and the biological sister of Rudolph II and Matthias.
From a tender age she loved our Lord dearly and always got up at midnight to attend to prayer. After turning 15, she was married to King Charles IX of France, but as her royal husband died early, the God-fearing widow returned to Austria.
She went on to found a monastery in Vienna and, as a sister of the Third Order, she moved into a house adjacent to the monastery. Feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, clothing the naked, giving alms to the poor, visiting and caring for the sick, comforting the afflicted - these corporal works of mercy became her entire occupation, apart from the hours she spent in actual prayer. Elizabeth went to her eternal reward in 1592, at the age of 37. (Hub. Mart.)
