SAINT MAXIMINUS, ABBOT
Saint Maximinus (commemorated on December 15, May 27 and July 25) is usually called Saint Mesmin in France. He was second abbot of the Micy monastery (Miciacum) near Orleans, founded in 508 by King Clovis, and in this dignity succeeded his uncle, Saint Euspicius, in 510.
Thanks to the success of the students he trained Maximinus achieved such fame that the monastery was later named after him. Among his most outstanding pupils was his brother Saint Lisardus, also Saint Avitus, Leonard, Urbin, Carileph, Theodomir, Laudomar and others.
Maximinus died on December 15, 520; the Roman Martyrology lists him on this day. His mortal remains, near which many miracles occurred (gesta Epp. Vird. bei Pertz, mon. Germ. hist, script. IV. 41), were initially buried in the cave from which he had driven out a monstrous and terrible dragon.
Later, after several translations, one of them on May 27 (Usuard*), and another on July 25 (Bollandists*), his relics were venerated in the abbey of Micy, but desecrated and dispersed by the Huguenots in the sixteenth century. The fifth abbot of Micy, Maximinus II the Younger, is also venerated as a saint.
