EULOGIUS OF ALEXANDRIA, HERMIT
Eulogius of Alexandria (Eulogius de Alexandria), a hermit, left the world in exchange for holy solitude, after he had successfully completed his studies. All his money and estate he distributed among the poor.
In a certain public place he came across a disabled gentleman who had neither hands nor feet, and Eulogius decided to take care of him. After the holy hermit had looked after him for fifteen years with a love as if he had been his father, the spirit of ingratitude suddenly seized the disabled man.
Quite out of the blue he started to complain, swear, and to inflict the gravest insults on his carer. Eulogius endured everything with Christian patience; but finally he brought the man to the great hermit Saint Anthony, who reproached him for his ingratitude, as a result of which the invalid repented. Eulogius went to his eternal reward about the middle of the fourth century and the poor disabled gentleman died three days after his generous benefactor. (Mg.)
